Rationale

Focus

The Parent Support Council (The Council), an extension of the Wisconsin Center for Gifted Learners (WCGL), is a group inivolved in helping parents of gifted learners to gain a better understanding of their children, their school environment, and themselves.

The Council offers information, camaraderie, informal discussion, and insight for all parents who seek to better understand their gifted learners' educational, social, and emotional needs.

The Council stresses the importance of the home environment as a safe place for children to return after a day of focused learning and exploration at school.

Activities

The Council meets for three hours, once a month, for ten months out of the year. Discussions are informative, proactive, and mutually supportive. Meetings may include discussion or information about the following:

  • Topics pertinent to gifted learners such as asynchrony, perfectionism, and heightened sensitivites. Supporting articles and other documents are made available to supplement knowledge and serve as a starting point for meaningful discussion.
  • WCGL events and philosophy.
  • Members' experiences regarding the understanding and nurturing of gifted learners.

If you feel that you might benefit from attending a Council meeting, view the Upcoming Events calendar to see when the next meeting will be held.

The Council organizes and sustains activities at WCGL, such as:

  • Annual book sale
  • All-school family potluck picnic
  • Parent social events
  • Speakers of interest to students, parents, and educators
  • Gatherings to enhance and beautify Center learning environments

Council members enjoy meeting and speaking with parents of other gifted learners, lending an ear, and offering support or advice in a collegeial and relaxed atmosphere.
